If you’re planning a ski retreat in the near future, it’s worth considering precisely how much you’re comfortable spending before you get too far into the booking process. Because, when it comes to ski holidays, a bit extra can afford you astronomically more. With that in mind, let’s look at five key reasons that it may be worth splashing out on a luxury ski holiday.

1. Unbelievable Scenery

Needless to say, the best ski resorts in the world are going to feature spectacular powder fields, tumbling glaciers and all-around unbelievable scenery. A legendary landscape is part of the equation. That is, after all, part of what drove them to the top of the list to begin with.

With that in mind, any less-than-luxury skiing destination is going to offer a less-than-spectacular environment. The slopes won’t be as dramatic, and the overall atmosphere of the destination is going to make less of an impression on those who are visiting. Choosing a sub-luxury ski destination could make sense if you’re scheduling an impromptu excursion with limited time, or if the skiers are travelling on a shoestring budget. Otherwise, a luxury-level outing is going to be much more rewarding.

The good news is that a significant portion of the world’s top ski destinations provide a decidedly inclusive range of offerings. You don’t have to arrange a helicopter transfer or an in-house butler in order to enjoy luxury ski resorts. In most cases, there are more affordable that still offer access to some of the finest slopes in the world.

2. Impeccable Service

As with any luxury holiday, the finest luxury ski chalets also offer impeccable service. From the moment you arrive until the second you depart, you’ll enjoy the exquisite care with meticulous attention to detail. It goes without saying that this level of service perfects the atmosphere of a ski holiday – whether you’re visiting the French Alps or the Canadian Rockies.

Generally speaking, any chalet is going to offer more (or at least a different style of) service than a ski hotel or lodge. When you book a chalet in the Alps, for example, you’re likely to receive a more personal level of service even from the moment of enquiry. After all, many of these chalets are only available to one group at a time, which means you become the focus of their attention from the moment you check in.

Furthermore, there are often many extras available. Some chalets feature in-house staff, half or full board and a range of other services as part of the packages. Others offer upgrades to those interested. There’s nothing quite like visiting one of the world’s premier ski destinations whilst enjoying such a high level of service.

3. Fine Cuisine

Any luxury-level ski resort is going to include more than its fair share of delectable dining offerings. Many of the finest resort areas have been in operation for centuries, and they’ve had plenty of time to attract a following of expert skiers, elite travellers and discerning connoisseurs. This paves the way for an outstanding selection of premier dining and drinking venues.

It also bears mentioning that a portion of the Alps are found in France – which is widely recognised as the birthplace of the culinary arts. Of course, they also extend east into Switzerland, considered the cradle of modern hospitality. In either event, guests enjoy some of the finest, most refined hospitality in the world.

While skiing may have been born in the Alps, the traditions associated with it have certainly spread to North America, Australia and beyond. Wherever travellers go to enjoy first-rate skiing, they’re also likely to find fine Michelin-calibre cuisine.

And that’s only part of the equation. Many top-tier ski chalets are also equipped with expert catering facilities. Some feature an in-house chef, either as part of the package or for an additional fee. In either case, guests enjoy top-notch catering in the comfort of their own accommodation.

4. Incredible Access

One of the frustrations that skiers may experience on holiday is less-than-convenient access to all of the facilities – from the pistes to the dining and drinking districts. After an intense day on the slopes, the last thing anyone wants is to trek across a significant distance to unwind, only to have to do the same again when it’s time to return home.

But the beauty of a luxury ski holiday is the ease of access to every manner of facility you could desire. Some of the top ski lodges and chalets are located very near the centre of the après-ski activities scene. Others provide ski-in / ski-out access on a prime stretch of the slope. Regardless, it’s worth taking time to determine which facilities you prefer to have access to and where you’d like to be located before booking ski accommodation.

Finally – and in line with what we’ve already mentioned in the points above – any luxury-level ski holiday is going to offer everything you need on site. Be it in-house catering, ultra-convenient transfers or luxurious facilities, you’ll be able to enjoy many of the perks without even leaving your place of accommodation.

5. Indulgent Facilities

Premium facilities are part and parcel with the trappings of luxury, and an indulgent ski holiday is no exception. Many of the top chalets in the Alps and elsewhere include everything from swimming pools and saunas to in-house cinemas. Suffice it to say, you’ll want for nothing when you book a luxury ski holiday.

And to be fair, the perks we’ve mentioned above are only the tip of the iceberg. Some of the accommodation available at the world’s top ski destinations is absolutely astounding in terms of luxurious facilities. In-house spas and bars, private helipads and expansive estates are all common. There’s a sliding scale, even for luxury ski retreats, and the facilities available at the top retreats are utterly astounding.

The good news is that the vast majority of ski destinations have options to suit a wide range of budgets. Even if you can’t afford a luxury excursion, there’s still a good chance that you’ll find something to suit your preferences and budget.
