Situated right on the beachfront, salve just past Fuengirola and close to Marbella on the Costa del Sol, lies the tiny seaside town of La Cala de Mijas. Originally a fishing village, La Cala has since grown into a quaint seaside resort, popular with English and other European tourists.

La Cala de Mijas might be a little quieter than its busy neighbours on the coast, but it still offers gorgeous sandy beaches, plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars and all the trappings necessary for a perfect seaside holiday. In the town and surrounding areas there are world-class hotels, as well as plenty of La Cala de Mijas rentals to choose from, all with convenience to the beach, shops and other attractions.

With clean sand lapped by the warm Mediterranean Sea, the beach is probably one of the most popular areas of La Cala, but the town does, of course, have much more to offer the visitor.

Golfers will love the area, as according to the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, La Cala has the largest golf complex in the country, with three 18-hole championship courses and a top quality 6-hole par 3 layout. Each of the 18-hole courses offers the golfer different challenges and top players have spoken very favourably of their experiences in the La Cala Resort.

For those with a love for horse riding, Finca Alegria is a private and family run riding school, offering all levels of riding and operating to a high standard under British management. Treat the kids to a pleasant horse ride, just minutes from the beaches.

Talking of horses, for those wishing to have a “flutter”, The Hippodrome, Costa del Sol is located just outside of La Cala de Mijas. The Hippodrome has two tracks, offers flood-lighting for night racing and has a grandstand which can seat 5,000 spectators. Not to be outdone, there is also trackside seating for another 5,000. There’s nothing like the excitement of a good horse race while enjoying your Costa del Sol holiday, especially if your horse comes in numero uno!

Using La Cala as a base, you will find it convenient to all the other resorts on the coastline, especially with such easy access to the N340 coastal highway. If you fancy watching a film, head into Fuengirola and the Cine Sur-Fuengirola cinema complex in Parque Myramar. There is usually a selection of films in English, especially in the summer months. Heading in the other direction, visit the Gran Marbella cinema complex in upmarket Puerto Banus.

For day time outings, “do” the fashion shops in popular Marbella, hang out with the celebrities in Puerto Banus, or head to the Bioparc Fuengirola. Drive a little further to catch the cable cars up to the Eagle sanctuary up on Calamorro Mountain. Going even further afield and more inland, take a drive to the fascinating mountain top town of Ronda with its many Roman and Moorish buildings and ruins to view.

So much to do! La Cala de Mijas is definitely an excellent base for all your activities during your holiday on the Costa del Sol. Have a great time!
